Singtel taps Swedish telco to launch 5G pilot network by Q4

It will be trialled in drones and driverless vehicles by late 2018.

Singtel and Swedish telco firm Ericsson will launch Singapore’s first 5G pilot network by Q4 2018, an announcement revealed.

With the aid of Ericsson’s 3GPP standards compliant 5G technology and the trial spectrum allocated by the Info-Communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), the pilot network can deliver 5G coverage with enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) speed and low latency communications.

According to the firms, the 5G will allow transmission of terabytes of data in minutes and 4K video downloads in seconds through its speeds that are 10 times faster average speeds than prevailing 4G rates.

With this, the network is said to allow industries such as transportation, healthcare and manufacturing to leverage 5G to further step up digital transformation and deploy advanced automation technologies.

Singtel and Ericsson are eyeing to trial the 5G in drone and driverless vehicles by late 2018 at one-north and other designated areas.

The firms revealed that enterprises can use the network to develop new 5G use cases and tap the business potential of 5G.

“We believe that 5G will play a key role in the digital transformation of the Singapore economy,” Ericsson country manager for Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines Martin Wiktorin said.
