Singapore commits $120m to advance AI use in scientific research

The investment is stipulated under Smart Nation 2.0.

Singapore will invest an extra $120m to boost artificial intelligence (AI) use in scientific research.

In his speech at the launch of Smart Nation 2.0, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the additional investments will help prepare the next generation of Singaporeans to "become curious, confident, and creative users of technology."

"We will enhance programmes, increase resources for schools, and strengthen support for educators to design effective learning experiences that develop students’ digital proficiency," Wong said.

Additionally, Singapore will launch a new Smart Nation Educator Fellowship next year.

The six-month programme will give Senior Specialists and Teacher Leaders practical knowledge of how technology is applied in real-world scenarios.

Next year, Singapore will also introduce "AI for Fun" modules.

The five to 10-hour elective modules, part of the Code for Fun programme, are available to all Minisytr of Education primary and secondary schools.

The modules provide students with hands-on opportunities to explore technology, including AI prototype design.

Next year, Smart Nation 2.0 will also introduce the Digital Infrastructure Act and establish an agency for online safety, supported by new legislation. 

The act will strengthen the security of key digital services, and the agency will protect victims of online harms.
