Over 2 million web threats in SG detected in Q1: report

This is an increase of 262.5% year-on-year from 632,000.

More than 2.29 million web threats were detected and prevented in Singapore in the first quarter of the year, Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) reported.

This reflected an increase of 262.5% year-on-year from only 632,360 web threats in 2020.

“The recent cyberattack incidents remind us that no industry is completely immune. Supply chain attacks are expected to feature more prominently when it comes to data breaches over the coming years, where services companies use often end up compromised by cybercriminals exploiting the vulnerabilities in servers and planting malware within them,” Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia, Kaspersky, said.

“Eventually, this single touchpoint can be the launching pad where additional cyberattacks are launched to compromise more companies.”

Singapore recorded the lowest detected web threats, compared to its neighbours in Southeast Asia, but it ranked as the highest source of online threats in the region.

KSN reported that 4.48 million of incidents were traced back to servers hosted in Singapore, which placed 10th in the world.

Yeo said this is a by-product of highly developed digital ecosystem in Singapore.

“With an increased digital footprint in the online world as telecommuting remains to be the norm, it is inevitable that fatigue and complacency is setting in,” Yeo said.

“We need to remain vigilant and adopt a holistic approach in protecting our cybersphere by ensuring security solutions are updated and adequate and proper cyber-hygiene is practised across one’s IT ecosystem.”
