Online shoppers lost almost $500,000 to scams in H1: police statistics

E-commerce crimes jumped 65.6%.

The number of e-commerce crimes booked a double-digit increase in the first half of the year, according to statistics released today by the Singapore Police Force.

The SPF said that there were 1,015 cases of online shopping scams in the first half, 65.6% higher compared to 613 cases in the first half of 2014.

Buyers lost approximately $450,000 from such crimes, while sellers lost roughly $44,000.

"“The growing trend of online crime is a cause for concern. While the Police will do all it can to investigate, deter and disrupt the activities of these criminals, the public has an important role to play. Online transactions may be convenient, but the public should always be alert and exercise due diligence when engaging in online transactions to avoid falling victim to scammers," said David Chew, Director, Commercial Affairs Department at SPF.

Singapore's overall crime rate grew 6.7% in the first half. Although the incidence of violent crimes and housebreaking declined, the contraction was offset by the increase in commercial crimes.
