IMDA's 4 5G open testbeds serve as access points for businesses

It aims to allow businesses to develop 5G solutions in different industries.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced that all businesses will have access to four 5G open testbeds. 

These testbeds will be located at the Maritime Drone Estate (MDE), Singapore Science Park, PIXEL, and Sentosa. The aim of the initiative is to allow businesses of different sizes, industries, and technology readiness levels to develop 5G solutions in different industries. 

Lew Chuen Hong, CE, IMDA, has said that this was the next step from the early success with the 5G pilots. This would mean the acceleration of the adoption and commercialisation of the technology.

The IMDA also partnered with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and CapitaLand Investment to help increase the availability of 5G to all businesses at the Maritime Drone Estate and Singapore Science Park.

These testbeds would also have their own areas of focus available to businesses, such as the testbed at MDE being focused on drone and maritime applications, the CapitaLand Investment on smart estate applications, and Pixel on augmented reality, virtual reality, and content production.

Previous applications of IMDA’s push for 5G applications include 5G maritime applications being deployed at scale, the TeamOne 5G modem and collaboration with IBM, M1 and Samsung Industry 4.0.
