Google starts building third data centre in Jurong West

It invested around US$350m in the new facility.

Google is working on a third facility in Jurong West, nearby its first two buildings, Google Data Centres vice president Joe Kava revealed.

According to a blog post, the expansion will bring its long-term investment in Singapore data centres to US$850m. The company previously said that it had invested US$500m in Singapore, which means the investment in the newest facility is at US$350m.

DataCenter Dynamics revealed the data centre will be built on a plot of land the size of the first and second data centres combined. It started building its first data centre in 2011 and started adding another one in 2015.

“The multi-storey facility will be one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly sites in Asia, in line with our global approach,” Kava said.

It will feature machine learning technology to reduce energy use. Google will also use recycled water to divert 100% of the data centre’s waste away from landfill.

“We’re looking forward to growing our small team at the data centres here, as well as expanding our ties with the local community,” Kava added. After the announcement of the third data centre, Google has then added more roles in Singapore for its jobs page.
