Grab to offer cashless payment in Kampong Glam

The government wants to step up the digitalisation of Kampong Glam and Little India as retail areas.

The government will push to digitalise the retail neighborhoods of Kampong Glam and Little India to improve efficiency and increase opportunities, communications and informations minister S Iswaran revealed.

Iswaran said that they partnered with Grab and the Temasek Polytechnic School of Business to offer a cashless payments solution and increase online merchant presence in Kampong Glam.

“The growth in digital capabilities also creates high-skilled jobs for Singaporeans and greatly improves our quality of life,” the minister said in a Gala Dinner at the Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association (LISHA).

They have also partnered with the Singapore Malay Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI) and One Kampong Gelam Association (OKG) to encourage merchants within the area to adopt digital solutions.

Iswaran added that they will work with LISHA and Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) to aid Little India merchants to take concrete step towards digital solutions.

LISHA and SICCI had inked deal to partner in the capability development of Little India merchants. Iswaran said that SICCI has been working closely with Enterprise Singapore to explore the establishment of its SME Centre in Little India.

“With this MOU, LISHA and SICCI hope to bring the SME Centre’s efforts closer to Little India’s businesses and help them adopt productivity-enhancing measures and access government funding,” Iswaran noted.
