Mah Bow Tan steps down as Singapore Labour Foundation chairman

Mr. Mah will be succeeded by Minister Gan Kim Yong.

According to a release, after serving for almost 10 years as Chairman of the Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF) Board, Mr Mah Bow Tan is stepped down on 3 September 2011 to ensure leadership renewal. Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Health, will succeed Mr Mah as Chairman SLF with effect from the same date.

As the longest serving chairman of the SLF, Mr Mah has made valuable contributions to the development and growth of the SLF and the Labour Movement in Singapore. He was first appointed as SLF Director on 12 December 2001 and thereafter as Chairman SLF from 21 February 2002.

Under Mr Mah’s stewardship, SLF strengthened its finances and effectively delivered on its mission of investing resources for purposes that benefit workers in Singapore. Prudent spending and a disciplined investment strategy have secured a robust foundation for SLF's continued ability to serve future generations of workers.

Under Mr Mah’s leadership, SLF has also helped advance tripartism to a higher level; through various efforts to improve the employability of workers, the development of union leaders, and financial support for lower income workers. The strong tripartite framework between the Labour Movement, Employers and the Government is a key competitive advantage for Singapore.

The Ministry of Manpower would like to express its deep appreciation to Mr Mah Bow Tan for his contributions over the years to the Singapore Labour Foundation, and for his persistent dedication to the Labour Movement.
