Working longer hours doesn't faze Singapore workers: survey

Over 2 in 5 already work more than 44 hours.

Though better work-life balance has recently been the trending topic for Singaporeans, workers appear to be happy with working overtime and are willing to work even more.

According to Randstad Award 2016 research findings, despite the Ministry of Manpower’s recommended limit of 44 working hours per week, most of workers continue to work overtime.

Over 2 in 5 (47%) workers reported working more than the stipulated 44 hours. Over half (52%) of men revealed that they work more than 44 hours per week, compared to about 2 in 5 (41%) of women.

Meanwhile, less than 1 in 10 (7%) stated that they would prefer to work less. About half of male respondents said they would be willing to work longer hours for more or equal pay. Meanwhile, only over 2 in 5 (42%) feel the same way.

Further, research indicates that about 4 in 5 (80%) Singapore employees are primarily motivated by earning more money. Career progression and personal development were ranked second and third with a lower 41% and 33% respectively.

On the other hand, of those hoping to work less, over 3 in 5 (67%) wanted more free time to chase personal endeavours. In addition, 3 in 5 (66%) shared they wanted better work-life balance. Family also ranked high on worker’s considerations as 2 in 5 stated they want to work fewer hours to spend time with their children.

Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
