Tiger moms galore: Over 4 out of 5 Singaporean parents willing to shell out for kids’ private tuition

But extra tutoring is too costly for some.

A vast majority of Singaporean parents are willing to shell out to provide extra tutoring for their kids, a survey by HSBC showed.

More than four in five parents, or 85% of respondents, have either paid or would consider paying for additional tutoring during at least one stage of their children’s education.

Nearly two thirds or 65% of parents have paid for additional tutoring at primary school level, while over half or 56% have paid for tutors to supplement secondary school education.

Less than one in five, or 16%, have paid for tutoring for children at university.

However, cost is a barrier for some, with more than one in 10 or 13% saying they cannot afford it.

The survey showed that among parents who would not consider paying for additional tutoring for their child, 36% think their child already spends enough time on school and homework, while 35% say they do not want to push their child too hard. 31% of parents believe that their child does well in school without extra help.
