Singapore lagged Japan, Hong Kong on most desirable cities list

As European countries dominated the top 10.

In a release, Property Life magazine announced its first annual list of the top 10 most desirable cities, a kind of expatriate ‘bucket list’ of places where everyone should live at least once in their lives.

While the list has been created using guidelines for livability, such as crime, healthcare, business standards and benefits for families, it is the subjective qualities of the list that make it unique.

The first step to creating a list of the most desirable cities was to first create smaller, top three lists of the best cities for a wide variety of desires. From these smaller lists, the most desirable list was created.

Points were awarded to each city to make the these lists, depending on its ranking at one, two or three, and the points were further weighted by considering languages spoken, crime statistics, and freedom of press. In the event of a tie, the city with the higher number of public holidays won.

3. Auckland, New Zealand
4. New York, USA
5. Zurich, Switzerland
6. Hong Kong
7. London, United Kingdom
8. Copenhagen, Denmark
9. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
10. Singapore

Alexander Knight, publisher of Property Life magazine, said, ‘Desire is subjective, of course, but it was fascinating to push beyond the standard studies of livability in order to produce a study of desirability. Property Life is the first publication to go out on this limb to say that there are cities where people not only should live, but actually want to live.

‘These are cities that are culturally vibrant, offer opportunities to travellers and expats, and all have solid or growing property markets. So even if you’re not looking to move, we’re still providing insights about where property investment is worthwhile.’
