Singapore’s population growth rate crashed to 10-year low in 2014

Non-resident population growth slowed to 2.9%.

The country’s population growth clocked in at 1.3% from June 2013 to June 2014, the slowest growth rate in the last decade.

In a report published today, the National Population and Talent Division revealed that Singapore’s total population was 5.47 million as of June 2014, but the citizen population continues to age, with 12.4% aged 65 and above compared to 11.7% last year.

The citizen population grew at the same pace as last year to 3.34 million, with citizen births and immigration. The permanent resident (PR) population remained stable at 0.53 million.

Meanwhile, the growth in the non-resident population slowed to 2.9%, down from 4.0% in the previous year. 

“This was due to concrete steps taken to slow the growth of our foreign workforce to a more sustainable pace. Going forward, businesses will face a tight labour market as we restructure the economy. Nonetheless, Singapore remains business-friendly, and we will help businesses to grow and succeed here, to create quality jobs for Singaporeans,” noted the report.
