Rising living costs and job insecurity keep employees in old roles

Seven in 10 employees stay in outgrown roles over a year.

 Seven out of 10 Singapore employees stay in outgrown roles for more than a year before looking for new opportunities, Jobstreet revealed.

According to Jobsteert, the results suggest that Singapore employees favour job stability over career progression.

“This inclination highlights a potential barrier to seizing new career opportunities and adapting to evolving market demands,” Jobstreet underscored.

Employees stay in outgrown roles because of rising living costs and job insecurity, with 31% citing financial stability, 35% work-life balance concerns, and 35% uncertainty about future job prospects.

“We’ve observed that Singaporean employees’ career decisions are sometimes driven by practicality – such as prioritising stability over looking for more fulfilling or challenging work. Coupled with uncertainties of today’s job market, this caution may be warranted – but at the same time, these employees may miss out on new opportunities that could unlock greater career growth and longer-term satisfaction,” says Chew Siew Mee, managing director, Singapore, Jobstreet by SEEK.
