Record number of Singaporeans applied to UK universities and colleges

3,835 applicants in 2012 highest ever.

According to new data from the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), a central service for higher education admissions, 3,835 people from Singapore applied to UK universities and colleges in 2012, up from 3,339 in 2011, 2,884 in 2010, and 2,494 in 2009.

UCAS manages the website www.ucas.com, and guides students through the process and use the online application system used in many of the UK universities and colleges.

UCAS adviser Peter Evans who is leading the UCAS International team in the British Council's Education UK exhibition in Singapore this weekend, said: “Interest in UK higher education continues to grow among Singaporean students, and we’re delighted to be back."

“By coming to Singapore, UCAS can give all those potential applicants access to the support and advice they need about the process. I’m really excited to be here.”

Sophie Cannon, Marketing and Communications Manager for the British Council, said: “UK education is all about helping students to reach their true potential, develop their skills and prepare for a career.

“From our surveys, we know that students have a great time in the UK. It’s a friendly place that welcomes students from all religions, cultures and nations. Most universities have lively Student Unions, where you can make friends, join clubs and try out new hobbies.”

Evans further announced that he will be answering students’ questions on the UK’s higher education application process on Sunday 24 March at the Marriott Hotel, 320 Orchard Road, Singapore, and will also be visiting a number of local schools throughout the week.
