Jobless rate inches down to 2.8% in May

This is an improvement from 2.9% from the previous month.

The employment situation in Singapore showed signs of improvement after the jobless rate dropped to 2.8% in May from 2.9% in the previous month.

According to the Ministry of Manpower’s (MoM) monthly unemployment situation report, there were continued declines in the unemployment rate seen amongst residents and citizens.

The jobless rate amongst residents dropped to 3.8% in May from 3.9% in April and 4% in March. Residents refer to Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

Meanwhile, the jobless rate of citizens went down to 4% from 4.1% and 4.2% in April and March, respectively.

Moreover, MoM reported there are 88,600 residents unemployed in May 2021, including 79,000 citizens.

The MoM noted the survey covered private households in Singapore, excluding workers living in construction worksites, dormitories, workers’ quarters at the workplace, and those commuting from abroad to work in Singapore.
