Immigrants urged to adapt to Singaporean values and norms

Especially as 4200 foreign spouses have LTV Pass Plus.

According to a Budget 2013 debate speech by Ms Grace Fu, Second Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Second Ministers for Foreign Affairs, many immigrants would have lived in Singapore for a number of years before taking up citizenship.

This was in response to to queries as Mr Ang Wei Neng, Mr Sitoh Yih Pin and Asst Prof Eugene Tan raised the issue of integration of new citizens.

She added that it takes time and effort for immigrants to understand and adapt to Singaporean values and norms. The National Integration Council (NIC) drives and coordinates integration efforts across different platforms - namely our schools, workplaces and community to familiarise newcomers to Singapore’s norms, cultures and values.

The speech also delved on encouraging immigrants to adapt to Singaporean values and norms. National Integration Council and the Singapore Citizenship Journey will continue to foster greater integration between immigrants and Singaporeans.

4200 foreign spouses of Singaporeans have been granted the Long Term Visit Pass Plus (LTVP+) since it was introduced in 2012 which has encouraged a greater certainty of stay and a higher level of social and work benefits.
