Daily Briefing: MINDEF to hire 300 cybersecurity experts; Grab unveils pet transport services

And 7 in 10 reported e-commerce scams in 2018 transacted in Carousell.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) targets to recruit about 300 cybersecurity experts to take up various roles in the military and non-uniformed professionals.
Personnel hired under the two new cyber expert schemes will undergo up to 20 weeks of training at the newly launched Cyber Defence School at Stagmont Camp.

The school will also train full time national servicemen in cyber defence skills. It will serve as the centre for cyber defence training and education across MINDEF, and will conduct cybersecurity workshops for MINDEF personnel.

Grab launched on-demand pet-friendly transportation service called GrabPet Beta which allows customer to hail services to ferry their dogs, cats, and other animal companions in Singapore.

Users can book a ride on-demand anytime without bookings or reservations in advance. The new service will also be an additional revenue stream for Grab driver-partners, and they can choose when they want to provide the service by toggling it on or off through the app.

Grab has already trained hundreds of driver-partners for the new service and will continue to expand the GrabPet fleet, it said in the release.

Statistics from the Singapore police revealed that about 70% of e-commerce scams that were reported in 2018 were transacted on online marketplace Carousell.

E-commerce scams were also identified as the top scam in Singapore with more than 2,000 cases reported in 2018, the police revealed at their annual media briefing.

The data release comes two days after Carousell announced that its fraud rate fell by 44% over the past 12 months. In a press release on Monday, Carousell said it had a fraud rate of 0.031% by Q4 2018, or three in 10,000 transactions on its platform were fraudulent.
