Chart of the Day: Here's why retrenchments rose in Q2
Some firms have on-going restructuring and reorganisation.
This chart from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) showed that retrenchments relatively toned down compared to 2016 and 2017.
However, the chart also revealed an uptick with 2,500 retrenchments from for Q2 2018 from 2,320 in Q1. MOM said that this is mainly due to on-going restructuring and reorganisation in some firms.
Despite this, Q2 2018 retrenchments still remain lower compared to the same period a year ago which saw about 3,640 retrenchments.
The uptick over the second quarter of 2018 occurred in manufacturing (32%). Meanwhile, other sectors including services (52%), and construction (16%) also saw declines in their sectors.
