3 in 5 fresh grads expect $3000 entry pay

Students expecting this much salary has been increasing by 10% yearly.

According to 2012 JobsCentral Employers of Choice survey, 64% of recent graduates expect at least $3000 monthly salary in their first job, according to an annual survey by JobsCentral. In 2011, the same survey reports only 55% of respondents demanding more than $3000 per month for their first job.

The higher expectation is even more apparent among the top students who were surveyed. Three out of four of them (73.9%) indicated that they’re expecting monthly salary of more than $3000 from their employer. Top students are defined as those who have attained or are expecting to obtain a degree with First Class Honours, Second Class Honours, Summa cum Laude or Magna cum Laude.

Results from the 2012 survey revealed a surge in the proportion of undergraduates and entry-level graduates
expecting a higher starting pay. At least two-fifth (40.7%) of this year’s respondents expected their starting salary to fall between the range of S$3,000 and S$3,499. This is in contrast to the 2011’s findings whereby only a third of the  respondents (33%) expected the same starting salary range. The majority of respondents (34.6%) in 2011 expected  a lower remuneration package of between S$2,500 and S$2,999.

According to the data collected from the JobsCentral Employers of Choice Survey since 2009, proportion of students who expect a monthly salary of $3000 has been increasing by approximately 10% yearly, and proportion of top students who have this expectation are approximately 10% more than the overall cohort.
