79% of millennials want re-skilling and upskilling opportunities from employers

Millennials feel they are not given enough opportunities to develop in their roles.

More than seven in 10 millennials find it important for their employees to offer them opportunities to re-skills, a Randstad survey has found.

Employees belonging to the Generation Z  (77%) and Generation X (66%) age groups shared the sentiment.

The eagerness of employees, particularly millennials, to upskill is likely driven by the competitive labour market.

According to Randstad, younger employees want to keep up with the demands of the labour market and expand their career options.

"It’s important for Singaporeans to feel skilled enough to not just perform their work, but also have access to new job opportunities in a highly competitive labour landscape," Jaya Dass, managing director for permanent recruit in the Asia Pacific at Randstad, said.

According to the survey, more than half (53%) of millennials feel that their employers have not given them enough opportunities to develop their roles.

Generation Z (56%) and Generation X (41%) felt the same.

As more and more companies digitise their processes, employees, especially Generation X (31%), fear that they may lose their job security if they cannot keep up with digital transformation.

“Companies need to be constantly investing in the skills development of their workforce to maintain a level of security for their employees. When people recognise how their work contributions have a positive impact on the company, they are more likely to be more engaged and productive in the way they interact and work," Dass said.
