5 in 10 workers expect a pay increase amidst unpaid extra labour

Employees said they do 6-10 extra hours of unpaid work each week.

Five in 10 workers in Singapore are expecting a salary raise in the next 12 months saying they deserve one because they do extra hours of unpaid work,  ADP® Research Institute’s People at Work 2022: A Global Workforce View report revealed.

Of those working extra hours, 43% of them said they do six to 10 hours of unpaid overtime each week.

If no raise will be given, 63% of workers said they will request one. This sentiment was shared the most amongst employees aged 25 to 34.

Despite many wanting a salary increase, only a third (31%) are expecting to be given a promotion or any increased responsibility (37%) in the next 12 months.

The study said Singaporeans place a "higher-than-average importance on pay," with 71% saying pay is the most important factor to them in a job.

“Having worked hard through the pandemic and with more vacancies than job seekers in the current job market, many workers feel they need – and are entitled to – a raise. Employers should bear this in mind in today’s the tight labour market, where maintaining a stable and skilled workforce is paramount yet more challenging than ever," Yvonne Teo, vice president of Human Resources, Asia Pacific, ADP, said.
