Plans to reshape Sentosa and Pulau Brani underway

The government will make way for new tourist attractions and investments.

A comprehensive set of plans are under development for Sentosa, Pulau Brani, and the Greater Southern Waterfront to enhance Singapore’s tourism sector, announced senior minister of state for trade and industry Chee Hong Tat on 17 October.

Plans to reshape the entire island of Sentosa are underway for new attractions and investments. Development plans are also in the works for the adjacent Pulau Brani and the Greater Southern Waterfront following the move of the container ports at Tanjong Pagar out of the city in the coming decade, Chee added.

“This expanded canvas, which is as large as Sentosa Island itself, provides exciting opportunities for us to develop new tourism attractions and anchor this precinct as the Southern Gateway of Asia,” Chee said.

Sentosa Island is home to Universal Studios Singapore and Resorts World Sentosa and is visited by approximately 19 million locals and tourists annually. It also hosted the Trump-Kim Summit in June.

Chee also mentioned ongoing plans with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Land Transport Authority (LTA), amongst many others, for Orchard Road which is Singapore’s main shopping belt. The changes will provide more scope for greener areas and innovation to take it beyond the likes of New York’s Fifth Avenue and London’s Oxford Street.

“It can also be an innovation district where we encourage companies, startups and social entrepreneurs to test out their ideas in areas such as new retail concepts, urban logistics and environmental sustainability,” Chee said.

The announcement was made during the official’s speech at the opening ceremony for travel trade show ITB Asia 2018 wherein he spoke about strategies to enhance Singapore’s tourism sector.
