NParks and URA launch design competition for Raffles Place Park revamp
The revamp aligns with broader plans to introduce more mixed-use and inclusive spaces.
The National Parks Board (NParks) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) have initiated a design competition to revamp Raffles Place Park (RPP), aiming to integrate nature into the urban landscape and rejuvenate the city center.
Originally developed 30 years ago, RPP sits above the Raffles Place MRT station and is a well-known public space amongst downtown office workers, residents, and visitors to the central business district (CBD).
The revamp aligns with broader plans to introduce more mixed-use and inclusive spaces to maintain CBD vibrancy beyond office hours, making the park an attractive communal area for events, activities, and relaxation.
Following 2021's engagement efforts under the Friends of the Park initiative, which gathered feedback from park visitors and stakeholders, the competition calls for designs that create inclusive spaces and enhance user well-being. Additionally, the revamped park aims to improve pedestrian connectivity and support Singapore's "City in Nature" initiative.
NParks and URA will collaborate with the winning team to redevelop RPP into a signature urban park and public space within the CBD by 2028. The competition, running until 12 September, is open to practicing architects registered with the Board of Architects.
