Nearly half of Singaporean youths take first self-funded trips before age of 18
On average, they spend around $940 on airfare for their first trip.
About 44% of Singaporean youths have taken their first self-funded trip before turning 18 without parental guidance, according to the First Trip with Skyscanner report.
The survey, involving 1,000 individuals aged 18 to 25, showed that 94% have either travelled independently or plan to.
Additionally, 58% planned their trips alone, 66% funded their travels from personal savings, and 22% of youths ventured on their first trip alone.
“The results really show us the desire of Singapore youths for independence, embracing the thrill and liberation that come with planning and funding a trip on entirely on their own for the first time,” said Skyscanner’s Travel Trends and Destination Expert Cyndi Hui.
The report also found that 65% travel to assess potential cities for future living or work, and 62% have studied or plan to study abroad.

Spontaneity is also prevalent, with 24% booking trips one to two weeks in advance and 13% travelling without a return ticket.
Meanwhile, safety is a top concern, especially amongst women (80%), followed by budget considerations (56%). Consequently, 36% choose Southeast Asia as their first travel destination due to safety and budget-friendly options.
On average, Singaporean youths spend around $940 on airfare for their first trip, with most spending between $1,200 to $1,600.
