Daily Briefing: Malaysian foreign minister says port limits issue quicker to fix than water concerns; 199 unlicensed PMDs impounded by LTA

Malaysian foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah said that the Johor Bahru port limits issue between Singapore and Malaysia can be resolved more quickly compared to the issue over water.

“I believe there will be good relations with Singapore and the discussions will be smooth," he added. "On the port limits, it can be resolved in the near future compared to the water issue, which I expect to take more time as it is quite complicated."

The two countries are locked in a maritime dispute sparked by Malaysia's unilateral decision to extend the Johor Bahru port limits last October, and the subsequent intrusion of Malaysian government vessels in Singapore waters.

E-scooter sharing firms Telepod and Neuron Mobility were charged for providing personal mobility device(PMD)-sharing services at public places without a licence or official exemption, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.

The LTA added that it had impounded 68 Telepod PMDs as of 14 February, following repeated written warnings to the firm that it should not make PMDs available for hire without a licence or prior exemption. They noted that 131 PMDs by Neuron Mobility were also impounded.

Amongst the locations that the two firms’ PMDs were impounded were Esplanade Drive, Bayfront Avenue, Bencoolen Street, Battery Road and Outram Road.

City Developments executive chairman Kwek Leng Beng suggests that the government should re-position Sentosa as a tourism mecca like Bali.

Kwek thinks that the non-residential part of Sentosa could be better utilized for meetings and conferences. The island’s hotels meanwhile -- and there are several new ones opening -- could attract more visitors.

“Sentosa was touted when it first started for the rich and famous,” Kwek said “Subsequently, her parents just forgot about this young lady. I would like to suggest that they should re-position it as the new Bali.”
