Wake Up admin faces defamation charges for false KKH miscarriage report

Defamation can be punished with a fine, and/or up to two years of prison time.

A man involved in a false article claiming a miscarriage happened at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) due to its mismanagement will face defamation, the Singapore Police Force said.

Authorities said the 26-year-old man will be charged in court on 24 April under section 500 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence can be punished with imprisonment of up to two years, or with a fine, or both.

KKH filed a police report on 25 March 2022 about the article “The baby is probably dead - Woman shares a harrowing account of her miscarriage at KKH A&E”, published on Wake Up, Singapore’s website, and social media accounts.

The article claimed that on 28 February 2022, the hospital reportedly failed to attend to a female patient who had been waiting for four hours for her COVID-19 treatment and abdominal pains, leading to a miscarriage. 

Police investigation revealed that the man was the administrator of Wake Up, Singapore’s platform. The allegations made were also proven to be false.
