Getting full COVID-19 vaccination will provide a 69% protection against the Delta variant, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said, citing a Singapore study.

The study was conducted by the National Centre for Infectious Diseases and the Ministry of Health. It studied the cases of about 1,000 households between September 2020 and end-May 2021.  

According to its findings, full vaccination could protect those with the symptomatic disease between 80-90%. Moreover, the effectiveness of the vaccine against severe cases is at 93%.

The government is planning to allow groups of 8 people to gather, starting 26 July, provided they have been fully vaccinated.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said raising the number of individuals in a gathering may be implemented once it fully vaccinates 50% of its population. At present, only groups of 5 are allowed to gather.

The 50% target is expected to be reached by the week of 26 July.

Supermarkets within TraceTogether-only SafeEntry buildings will be reintroducing the TraceTogether-only SafeEntry and SafeEntry Gateway check-in, the Ministry of Health said.

Starting 21 July, the check-in requirement will be put in place, after the Ministry observed a high volume of consumers in supermarkets.

This is to prevent the risk of transmission, as well as help facilitate a more targeted contact tracing for people.
