Coca-Cola shuts Tuas manufacturing plant, bids goodbye to almost 200 workers

It will instead focus on high-value added services.

Coca-Cola Singapore Beverages (CCSB) will wind down its manufacturing operations at its bottling plant in Tuas over the coming months in response to Singapore’s economic restructuring drive.

Instead of manufacturing, Coca-Cola will focus on high-value added services such as new technologies, innovation and research, and has committed to investing US$100 million in Singapore over the next five years.

The closure will affect around 200 employees, who will be offered support by Coca-Cola, the Employment and Employability Institute, and the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU).

"When FDAWU was informed of Coca-Cola’s plans, it quickly commenced discussion  with CCSB to ensure fair compensation and treatment for the affected employees. CCSB was committed to this, and has been open to the union’s requests and suggestions. The company has fulfilled the terms of retrenchment beyond industry norms.” said Tan Hock Soon, General Secretary, Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union.

CCSB will continue to employ approximately 450 people while retaining its current product portfolio, its sizable sales force, and its sales and marketing, warehousing, distribution, procurement, human resources, finance/admin, legal and IT functions.

Coca-Cola will also continue to employ approximately 300 people across its other operations in Singapore.
