MAS launches giant panda commemorative coins

Take a sneak peek of these adorable coins featuring Kai Kai and Jia Jia.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) today launched the 2012 Giant Panda Commemorative Coins. These coins, which will be issued today, mark the arrival of two giant pandas – Kai Kai and Jia Jia, in Singapore. The coins also help highlight the threat of extinction faced by giant pandas today and the importance of wildlife conservation.

Coin Design
2 The coins come in three different versions with a similar design concept featuring Kai Kai and Jia Jia, in their natural habitat. The names of the pandas are engraved in Chinese characters on the coins. The Silver Proof coin comes in a unique oval shape, the first of its kind in Singapore.

3 The obverse of the coin bears the Singapore Arms with the year 2012.

Limited Worldwide Mintage

4 The details of the coins are as follows:
a. $5 Silver Proof Colour Coin

31.10 grams of 999 fine silver with full colour application. Coin size of 45.00mm x 31.00mm. Mintage of 10,000 pieces.

b. $2 Cupro-Nickel Proof-Like Colour Coin

Proof-like condition with full colour application. Coin diameter of 38.70mm. Mintage of 10,000 pieces.

c. $2 Cupro-Nickel Proof-Like Coin
Proof-like condition with full engraving features. Coin diameter of 38.70mm. Mintage of 10,000 pieces.

d. 3-in-1 Coin Set
The premium set comprises a $5 Silver Proof Colour Coin, a $2 Cupro-Nickel Proof-Like Colour Coin and a $2 Cupro-Nickel Proof-Like Coin. These coins are part of the coin mintages that are sold individually. Mintage of 3,000 sets.
