Singapore, Ethiopia pledge to strengthen ties, explore new areas of cooperation

The two nations are seen as “gateways to enhance links between Southeast Asia and Africa.”

Singapore and Ethiopia are looking for new potential areas of cooperation in transport, connectivity, digitalisation and capacity-building issues, according to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. 

During his toast speech at the Official Dinner in Honour of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday, Wong said the two leaders are committed to deepening ties between their two countries. 

The two have agreed to establish bilateral consultations between their foreign ministries to assess and look for new areas of cooperation, including transport, connectivity, digitalisation, and capacity-building issues. 

“I am glad that both sides are now keen and determined to do more to strengthen our relationship,” Wong said, noting that companies in Singapore are already interested in expanding their reach in Ethiopia’s agriculture, logistics and aircraft maintenance sectors.

“As hubs to our respective regions, there is scope for Singapore and Ethiopia to serve as gateways to enhance links between Southeast Asia and Africa,” he added.
