NEA will require building managers to send food waster reports

This aims to reduce costs for businesses, Senior Minister Khor said.

Building managers will now be required to submit food waste reports in accordance with Section 27C under the Resource Sustainability (Amendment) Bill.

In the second reading of the Bill held in 21 March, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor said that this will push property managers to become more conscious about food waste minimisation.

“In the long run, reducing food waste and segregating food waste for treatment could also reduce costs for businesses, such as by reducing waste disposal costs downstream and reaping value from transforming food waste into higher value products,” Khor said in parliament.

This new food waste reporting framework for industrial and commercial areas shall complement the bill’s segregation and treatment requirements.

Beginning 1 January 2024, the food waste report requirement will be implemented for new buildings. These establishments are those awaiting application approval that was submitted on or after 1 January 2021.

However, for existing buildings, reporting requirements will be asked of starting in the second half of 2025.
