Gov't mulls tightening COVID-19 restrictions ahead of Chinese New Year

They are still considering whether such measures are necessary.

Singapore might implement tighter measures ahead of the Chinese New Year due to the rise of community cases roughly a few weeks after the year-end festive period, Multi-Ministry Taskforce co-chair Lawrence Wong told the media in an interview.

He added that they are still studying what the exact measures will be, and are taking careful consideration of its necessity.

“We are concerned that if we continue in the same sort of situation, we don't do something more, then this continued creep in the cases may end up in new clusters emerging, that may be beyond our control later,” Wong said.

Wong, along with his co-chair Gan Kim Yong, urged Singaporeans to remain vigilant as the rollout of vaccines does not mean the end of the pandemic.

"Despite our measures, nothing will ever be water tight," he said.
