Foreign employment boosts non-resident population by 5%

It also helped push the overall population to 6.04 million.

Foreign employment growth has pushed the non-resident population in Singapore to 1.86 million as of June 2024. 

Singapore's foreign workforce also makes up about two-thirds of the country's non-resident population. The remaining one-third comprises mainly migrant domestic workers, dependents, and students. Compared to June 2023, the non-resident population grew by 5.0%. 

"As Singapore is fundamentally labour-constrained, the foreign workforce complements our local workforce and allows companies to access a broader range of skills from the global labour pool," the Department of Statistics said in its Population in Brief report. 

With the increase in the non-resident population, a 0.7% rise in citizens, and a 1.2% growth in permanent residents, Singapore's overall population reached 6.04 million, up 2.0% year-on-year.
