Daily Briefing: Singapore reveals Shell refinery lost fuel worth US$40m; Kempinski to manage its first Singapore hotel

And here's why the number of employers using enhanced WorkPro scheme rose.

Singapore has pressed 51 new charges against the thieves in Royal Dutch Shell's oil refinery. This has lifted the value of the stolen fuel from US$10m to a whopping US$40m.

"Five former employees of Shell’s Singapore subsidiary received 51 additional charges in court on Friday for suspected theft at the Pulau Bukom refinery, Shell’s biggest, to bring the total allegations against them to 63 each, the documents showed.

The charges relate to incidents involving a total of 66,141 metric tonnes of gasoil valued at around $32.1 million between late April 2017 through to early January this year.

An additional three former Shell employees received eight additional charges for incidents involving 16,394 metric tonnes of gasoil valued at around US$8.4m, raising their total allegations to 15."

In a parliamentary reply to reply to MP Rahayu Mahzam, manpower minister Josephine Teo said that from 2013 to 2017, over 3,400 companies employing about 368,000 workers have benefitted from WorkPro grants.

"'Since the enhancement, and with additional effort to promote the scheme, the number of companies that benefited from the JRG has increased from about 30 a year to about 440 a year,' Minister Teo confirmed.

She added: 'WorkPro funding is only disbursed when we are satisfied that the company has achieved the corresponding grant deliverables and is able to demonstrate the impact to their employees.'”
