Chart of the Day: Proportion of part timer residents rose to 10.5% in 2016

The number of residents working part time increased by 71,800.

This chart from the Ministry of Trade and Industry Singapore (MTI) shows the proportion of part-time workers out of all employed residents rose 10.5% in 2016 after seven years.

In 2009, the rate only hit 8.4%.

The number of part-time employed residents increased by 71,800. Within six years, the number of resident part timers grew from 156,200 to 228,000.

The rise of the part-time workforce could be due to both supply and demand factors.

On the supply side, there could be more Singaporeans preferring to work on a part-time basis due to lifestyle considerations, or because of caregiving responsibilities.

On the demand side, companies facing labour shortage may find it useful to tapinto the pool of part-time workers to overcome their labour constraints.
