Singapore unveils digital defence as six pillar in total defence framework

The defence minister thinks that Singaporeans should stand guard against both physical and digital threats to sovereignty.

Singapore has earmarked digital defence as the sixth pillar in the total defence framework, alongside military, civil, economic, social and psychological defence.

On his Total Defence Day message, minister for defence Ng Eng Hen to stand vigilant against old and new threats.

“Whether its against terrorism, cyberattacks, or border incursions, we need Total Defence to remain strong and sovereign.” he said.

In 2018, Singapore was hit by its largest cyberattack after Singhealth cyberattack has caused alarm as it bared information of about 1.5 million Singaporeans including prime minister Lee Hsien Loong. Meanwhile, the data of 14,200 HIV patients in Singapore were also leaked online in January.

According to Ng, threats can come in physical forms such as terrorisms or through the cyberworld.

“Malicious malware can cripple our systems,” he explained. “Fake news can cause racial riots and divide our people.”

The minister believes that the new pillar will enhance Singapore’s cybersecurity and help citizens to be ready to respond to digital threats.

“Our determination to defend Singapore through each playing his or her part and all coming together for a Total Defence will secure our sovereignty and independence for many years to come,” Ng said.
