Singapore's ruling party wins albeit waning support

PAP now makes up 61% of the parliament, down from 70% in the 2015 elections.

The People’s Action Party (PAP), Singapore’s ruling party, has retained its seat in the government from the General Elections (GE) held last 10 July. This allows Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong to serve another five-year term in office.

The figures showed that the PAP won 83 parliamentary seats out of 93, which make up about 61%. However, these numbers dipped from 70% during the 2015 elections.

Elections procedures have observed social distancing measures, but had to be extended for two hours until 10pm to make up for the long queues.

PM Lee called for the poll amidst the ongoing pandemic. “The alternative is to wait out the COVID-19 pandemic. But we have no assurance that the pandemic will be over before this Government’s term must end next April. And this is why I have decided to hold the General Election now,” he said in a press conference.
