The hunt begins: 6 in 10 S'poreans to look for a new job within the next year

Millennials lead the charge with 71% looking for a change of employer.

A report from Employment Hero revealed that 59% or six out of 10 Singaporean workers are planning to look for a new job.

It is also notable that 77% of those planning to resign and look for new roles received a pay cut during the pandemic.

Amongst the 1,005 respondents surveyed, 38% of those planning to look for a new job pointed to a lack of career opportunities; 34%, to a lack of pay raise.

Other reasons pointed to by respondents include the lack of appreciation (30%), poor company culture (23%), feeling overworked (23%), lack of training opportunities (19%), lack of flexibility (18%) and poor working relationships with their boss (15%).

One of the findings of the research also saw that younger workers led this movement, with 71% of millennial employees aged between 25 to 34 agreeing that they would look for a new role.

On the other hand, those who did not plan to look for a job cited the volatile environment brought about by the pandemic, with 33% answering positively.

To encourage them to stay in their current role, 54% pointed towards a salary increase, whilst 29% wanted a promotion. Other reasons cited by others include having more rewards and recognition (29%), a bonus structure (28%), more flexible working options (28%), and training and career development (23%).

“In this candidate-driven market, employers need to pivot their thinking to be people-first. The good news is that you can do this at a reasonable cost. For instance, employers can spend time setting up a career development pathway for staff, invest in employees by offering training or an internal mentorship, giving staff extra leave days, or by offering staff flexible and remote working arrangements,” said Ben Thomspon, CEO and co-founder, Employment Hero.
