Macau visitor spending grows 17.5% in Q2

But the retail sector is likely to start losing momentum.

Macau visitors have splurged more as total spending jumped 17.5% YoY whilst per-capita spending of inbound visitors grew 11.7% in Q2.

According to OCBC, this was led by a 22.1% YoY growth in total spending of Mainland visitors, which contributed 78.9% to total visitor spending.

OCBC commented, "Against the backdrop of resilient economic growth in China, Mainland visitors showed increased willingness to spend overseas. This signals that retail sales might have exhibited buoyant growth in 2Q 2017."

However, a slowdown in China’s growth may occur in H2 and affect spending of Mainland visitors.

Per capita spending of visitors from Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong fell by 6.9%, 10.9%, and 8.3%, respectively, due to expensive of accommodation and transportation.

As a result, Macau's retail sector is likely to lose momentum in H2.
