Japan's GDP growth could contract 5.2%

Economy activity is expected to suffer despite restrictions being lifted in prefectures.

Japan’s economic growth may hit a 5.2% decline from 3.5% from a previous forecast, according to a Fitch Solution’s report. This follows the 0.8% QoQ contraction of the GDP and 3.4% YoY dip in Q1.

Private consumption already contracted 2.8% QoQ annualised, and the Q2 figure is likely to be lower as economic activity has suffered in April and May, despite restrictions being lifted in the other prefectures.

Purchasing Managers' Indices (PMIs) in Japan have plunged in March and April, with PMI services sinking to 21.5 in April, down from 33.8 in March and 46.8 in February. Manufacturing PMI also dropped to 41.9 in April, from 44.8 in March and 47.8 in February.

Revenues from the tourism industry, which accounts for around 7.5-8% of GDP in 2018, are also expected to collapse. In February and March, tourist arrivals plummeted 60.7% YoY and 93.4% YoY, respectively. Meanwhile, the occupancy rate of hotel rooms fell to 31.9% in March, compared to 62.8% a year ago.

As result of falling revenues in the tourism industry as well as other sectors, Japan’s unemployment rate is expected to rise to 3.8% by the end of 2020, from 2.2% in December 2019.

Japanese exports, which accounted for around 18% of GDP in 2018 and 2019, are seen to contract sharply by 27.0% as the global economy continues to suffer. Both domestic and external pressures are also likely to weigh on private investments, which is expected to contract 14%.

With this, government consumption is expected to rise to 2.5% in 2020, higher than the 2.0% figure seen in 2009.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

You're the reader we write for. You're also the person our partners want to reach.

If that sentence describes you — a founder, a C-suite, someone whose attention companies pay good money for — then you already understand why SBR works. We've spent twenty years earning the trust of readers exactly like you. Which is exactly what makes this an interesting place for your company to show up, too.

The ways it can show up are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The right fit depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If your company has something this audience should know about, we'd like to hear what you're working on.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.

30 One-Sentence Stories From People Who Have Built Better Habits
None of these stories are mine. They were sent to me by readers of Atomic Habits. My hope is that these examples will illustrate how real people are putting the book into practice. They will show you what people are actually doing to build good habits and break bad ones. And hopefully, they will spark some ideas for how you can do the same.
