Silicon Box to build a $4.8b semiconductor facility in Italy
The facility is expected to create up to 1,600 jobs.
Singapore-based semiconductor company Silicon Box is investing up to $4.8b (US$3.6b) in Northern Italy for a new semiconductor assembly and test facility.
The investment will recreate Silicon Box’s flagship foundry in Singapore for advanced semiconductor packaging solutions, to be expanded further into 3D integration and testing.
The facility will manufacture, assemble, and test chiplets on silicon wafers to be shipped to specialty chip design companies, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Upon completion, the facility is expected to support about 1,600 employees in Italy.
Construction will commence upon the European Commission’s approval of planned financial support by the Italian State whilst design and planning will start immediately.
Silicon Box also floated plans for more expansions in Europe and globally.
Silicon Box co-founder and chairman Sehat Sutardja expressed his excitement in “bringing Italy to the forefront of chiplet deployment and the semiconductor industry.”
“It will enhance competitive strengths in design, artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), electronic vehicles (EVs) and automotive, mobile, wearables, smart consumer, edge computing, and material sciences of the Italian ecosystem, and revolutionize Europe’s position in the global [semiconductors] supply chain,” Sutardja said.
