Is it time to say goodbye to construction workers?

Singapore is seeing a wave of new technological advances that will make building and construction a breeze. According to Minister of National Development Khaw Boon Wan, these advances will inprve construction productivity and reduce the country’s reliance on construction workers.

In a blog post published today, Minister Khaw particularly highlighted the Prefabricated Pre-finished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) method, which is currently being used to construct the 10-storey extension to Crowne Plaza Changi Airport Hotel, owned by OUE Limited.

Using this method, room-sized modules are pre-fabricated and completed with internal finishes, textures and fittings, before being transported back and installed on site.

“This is a proven game-changing technology elsewhere but still relatively new in Singapore. We hope it will become common practice soon,” noted Khaw.

He also noted that the NTU will be constructing its sports hall using Cross Laminated Timber, a new material that has the same fire safety requirements as concrete and steel and could be used for buildings up to 24 metres.

According to Khaw, “PPVC and CLT enable manpower and time savings of up to 50% and 35% respectively, as compared to conventional construction methods. We are speeding up the adoption of such game-changing technologies.”
