How is Singapore elevating construction productivity?

New scheme will help employers train multi-skilled and more productive construction workers.

Companies are encouraged to "skill-up" veteran workers who have been proven their competence in one area to begin training and mastering another.

Among the included benefits of this scheme are reduced downtimes for finding suitable manpower and raised productivity for the trained workers who will be able to take on multiple roles.

Employers can start registering thier workers with minimum 4 years of construction experience and 2 acceptable certifications for the multi-skilling scheme begininig July 1, 2012.

It will be implemented by the Building and Construction Authority.

“Contractors with multi-skilled workers will find it easier to deploy them according to the projects’ manpower needs, as they can perform 2 to 3 different types of work throughout the construction process. This can help us reduce time required to mobilise workers, which would otherwise result in time loss to projects. This recognition also provides an avenue for workers to attain the 'Higher Skilled' status apart from Coretrade," said Dr Ho Nyok Yong, President of Singapore Contractors Association Limited.
