LTA to construct Walk2Ride sheltered link ways at 59 MRT stations

Target completion is by 2018.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has called tenders to construct sheltered link ways at 59 MRT stations. The tenders are the first of four tenders to be called under the Walk2Ride programme which will expand the coverage of sheltered link ways island-wide.

The tenders will cover MRT stations in the north-eastern and north-western parts of the island. The remaining two tenders, which will be called in the fourth quarter of this year, will cover the remaining MRT and LRT stations.

Since January this year, LTA has been conducting site surveys of all MRT stations, bus interchanges and LRT stations as part of preparatory work for the Walk2Ride network. Construction will take place in phases over a period of 5 years, with programme completion targeted by 2018.

About the Walk2Ride Programme

Currently, sheltered link ways are provided from transport nodes to schools and health care facilities within a 200m radius. Sheltered link ways are also provided within residential estates by the Town Councils.

Under the Walk2Ride programme, which was announced in January this year, LTA will expand the coverage of the sheltered link way network by ensuring sheltered connectivity between transport nodes and schools, health care facilities, residential developments and public amenities within a 400m radius of all MRT stations and within a 200m radius of all LRT stations and bus interchanges.

The Walk2Ride programme will also connect about 100 existing bus shelters with high usage to trip generating hubs within a 200m radius of these bus shelters.

Besides sheltered link ways, LTA will also ensure barrier-free connectivity with signage and network maps for a comfortable, convenient and seamless journey when commuters transit between transport nodes.
