Singapore Airlines inks $3.77b order with GE Aviation

The order includes the purchase of 22 GE9X engines for its new Boeing 777-9 fleet.

Singapore Airlines inked a $3.77b (US$2.8b) order with engine provider GE Aviation to power its new Boeing 777-9 fleet, consisting of 31 aircrafts.

The order includes the purchase of an additional 22 GE9X engines and a 12-year services contract with GE. Initially, the airlines purchased 40 GE9X engines.

“The cutting-edge technologies that have gone into the Boeing 777-9 and the GE9X engines will help SIA to increase our operating efficiencies, lower our fuel burn, and materially reduce our carbon emissions. This will reinforce SIA’s position as a leading global airline, and enable us to capture future growth opportunities,”  said SIA’s senior vice president for engineering, Lau Hwa Peng.

The GE9X engines are made with heat-resistant Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) materials, additively-manufactured parts and lean-burn combustion that helps improve fuel efficiency. It has an overall pressure ratio of 60:1, the highest of any commercial airline engine in service.
