Daily briefing: SIA halts wage cuts for SG-based staff; New measure renews expiring work permits in construction, shipyard sectors

The Singapore Airlines (SIA) has ended the monthly variable component wage cuts of its staff who are based in Singapore.

According to the SIA, the cuts, which were imposed last year as its revenue dropped, will end starting 1 August.

However, this will not cover pilots as additional pay cuts concerning them will remain. This is in line with the agreement of the Airline Pilots’ Association – Singapore union to reduce job losses amongst pilots.

The Ministry of Manpower announced it will put in place a new measure that will renew expiring permit of workers for up to two years.

Work permit holders in construction, shipyard and process sectors will be allowed to renew, if they fail to meet the renewal criteria.

Firms also do not need to maintain the minimum requirement of 10% higher skilled workers  of their work permit holders.

Singapore has sent a COVID-19 assistance package in aid of Indonesia amidst surging COVID-19 cases.

The Republic of Singapore Navy facilitated the transfer of the packages. Also present during the send-off were Temasek Foundation International Chief Executive Benedict Cheong and Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Singapore Suryo Pratomo.

The packages also included assistance packages for the Indonesian Armed Forces from the Singapore Armed Forces.
