Changi Airport’s passenger traffic soars to 58.9 million in 2023

The 2023 record is 86% of the 2019 level.

Changi Airport handled 58.9 million passengers in September 2023, translating to 86% of the passenger movements recorded in 2019.

With 328,000 aircraft movements in 2023, the airport is also close to reaching 2019 level.

When comparing against pre-COVID figures, the region which posted the strongest growth in 2023 was North America, which has exceeded 2019 levels by more than 25%. Meanwhile, Europe, Southwest Pacific and South Asia are close to full recovery, registering over 90% of 2019 traffic.

On a year-on-year comparison, Northeast Asia was the forerunner, with passenger traffic increasing more than four times that of 2022 due to a significant increase in travel between China and Singapore. 

Southeast Asia posted the second-strongest growth during the year, registering a 72% YoY growth.

The top five drivers of passenger traffic for 2023 were  Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand and India.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali) and Manila were Changi Airport’s busiest routes during the year.
 
Unlike passenger movement, the airport’s cargo flow dipped slightly compared to 2022 due to global economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures. 

Changi’s top five air cargo markets for the year were China, Australia, Hong Kong, the United States of America and India.
