CAAS unveils new rules on in-flight use of portable electronic devices

Flyers can now play games for their entire flight.

Here’s some welcome news for travelers who just cannot live without their electronic devices. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) today announced its amended regulations regarding portable electronic devices (PEDs), which will allow Singapore carriers to expand passenger use of PEDs.

Under the new rules, actively transmitting PEDs such as mobile phones can now be used when cruising altitudes are above 10,000 feet. However, their use remains prohibited from taxi-out to 10,000 feet and from 10,000 feet to landing.

On the other hand, unintentionally transmitting PEDs such as electronic games, radio receivers and cameras can now be used for the duration of the entire flight, as long as it is granted approval by CAAS.

According to the CAAS, “For the additional flight segments where the use of PEDs are permitted with
CAAS’ approval (see Annex), Singapore carriers have to ensure that the aircraft meet the certification requirements and conduct the necessary safety risk assessments to verify that the use of PEDs does not interfere with the performance of the aircraft navigation or communication systems. However, voice communications using mobile phones will still be strictly prohibited from the time the aircraft leaves the departure gate until the time before it exits the runway upon landing. This is because voice communications, requiring strong signals to be sent out for receipt at great distances, may interfere with the aircraft systems.”
