This is why Wilmar will hit incredible Q3 gains

Thanks to expansion of palm and laurics refining capacities in Indonesia.

According to CIMB, it expects Wilmar to post stronger qoq earnings as its palm and laurics segment benefit from the expanded refining capacities in Indonesia. This will be supplemented by sugar contributions from Sucrogen which are captured in 2H during the harvesting season.

Consumer products division are expected to report higher sales in 3Q due to Mid-Autumn festivals and better margins due to lower feedstock costs. But this will be partially offset by the challenging operating environment faced by its oilseeds and grains division due to overcapacity. The good news is that the back-to-back crushing margins in China appear to be improving. 

3Q12 plantation earnings are expected to be weaker than the previous year due to lower selling prices and higher costs of production.

A higher ratio of planters disappointed us and consensus in the 2Q results season. The key reasons for the underperformance were weaker production in the case of Malaysian planters, higher costs in the case of some Indonesian producers, and weaker crushing margins for Wilmar.

Other reasons cited for the weak 2Q performances include higher replanting costs, a larger inventory level as at end-June, higher fertiliser application in 1H12, and weaker refining margins achieved by the Malaysian downstream players.
