Government aims to have 30% of food to be locally-produced

Environment and Water Resources minister aims to use new tech solutions to raise productivity of farms.

Environment and Water Resources minister Masagos Zulkifli aims to have 30% the country’s food to be home-grown by 2030, which will introduce a number of new initiatives for farms and fisheries, according to his speech at the Committee of Supply Debate 2019.

The ‘30 by 30’ initiative would require new solutions to raise productivity, apply research and development (R&D), strengthen climate resilience, and overcome resource constraints. The Government now aims to expand the production of indoor farms by using LED lighting and climate control solutions. Zulkifli also mentioned that farmers will soon have access to computerised control systems.

Singapore Food agency (SFA) is also looking to give deep sea farms new tech solutions to further enhance its production capabilities.

“We will also partner universities to groom Agri- and Aqua- technologists and culturists, urban farming specialists, and researchers to meet future needs,” Zulkifli added.
